Updated: Jan 11

In a very ancient time, since people find out the coffee beans have a magic function to refresh the mind. They firstly boil the whole beans to get the magic soup. Then they gradually find out to crush the beans and boil the fractions will get better soup. After that, the process of crushing is named as grinding.

Nowadays, we upgraded our tools to intelligent electrical coffee grinders which are accurate, time-saving, labor-saving, high-quality output. They are really great design and invitation for our daily coffee addiction. But we can't avoid the malfunction of the appliance. So we need a substitute for our treasured electrical coffee grinders.

So here I will show you how to make coffee powder with Mortar and Pestle like the ancients did which can provide you with an unconventional experience.

As we know, the mortar and pestle can crush vegetables, seasoning, fruit, medicine, etc. The grinding of coffee beans will be similar to grinding peppercorn and other dry beans. So let's check step by step.

1. Cleanse the mortar

Because the fraction and powder left last time and the dust will accumulate after days, we need to cleanse it with a brush to ensure no other substance left to affect the flavor of the coffee.

Attention: make it dry before usage

2. Put the beans

Add the coffee according to personal needs, I always put 1 cup or 2 cups. Don't let the beans exceed the half-line of mortar because the stirring will push the beans up and may push the beans and powder out if it's too much.

3. Grinding the beans

  • Firstly, don't crack too hard. Stir and push gently because at the first stage the beans will roll and slip out if you push too hard. The coffee beans are round and you can only crush them by slow and strong power.

  • Secondly, you can crack them by lifting and falling the pestle. And use the strength correctly instead of breaking the mortar.

  • Thirdly, repeat step 1 and step 2 until the powder is OK. The satisfying fineness depends on the personal flavor.

4. Pour the coffee powder

Get the powder out with a spoon, put the coffee in a container or directly to the coffee maker. If you want very fine powder, you can use a sieve to filter the big fraction. If you want rough powder, the method is the same. Honestly, I don't care about this, so I will put them all in a SUS coffee filter for hand brewing.

5. Cleanse the powder left

It's important to get rid of the powders left because they will stick on the wall of mortar if it's not cleaned for too long time.

We can clean with a brush for the major powder. And wash them to clean some powder not easy to clean.

Remember to dry them after the process.

Above is the whole process. Hope this can help you.

In daily life, the mortar and pestle can do more works. It will be a great tool in the kitchen. So I suggest you can have one. Besides, it's cheap anyway. The only disadvantage is that it will take time and strength, but it's an enjoyable process for me honestly.

I also advise you to have a manual conical grinder that can do the same work as the mortar and pestle. This will also help you to overcome the days of malfunction of electrical coffee grinders.
